Building the Submenu Clips
The submenu clip I’ll go through is the services submenu, which includes four main subcategories, animation, consulting, training, and design.

  1. First, I’ll start by creating a subfolder in the Library. Under menu/clip.mainMenu I created a folder called clip.m.services. I’ll place the services clip into this folder along with the submenu clip for the services section.
  2. Having created the subfolder, the next step is to {Right-Click} clip.m.maincategories and select duplicate. It will produce a copy called clip.m.maincategories copy.
  3. Next, we drag the duplicate clip into the clip.m.services folder.
  4. Next, we rename the clip clip.m.services.
  5. Now, the good part, we {Double-Click} clip.m.services to edit it.
  6. We have a duplicate of the content in clip.m.maincategories. We’ll keep the arrows Layer and the categories Layer, but delete or trash the button.award and button. profile Layers as we have only four (4) not six (6) categories in this clip.
  7. Next, we’ll rename the Layers appropriately.
    • button.preferences becomes button.animation
    • button.services becomes button.consulting
    • button.column becomes button.training
    • button.contact becomes button.design
  8. Next, we need to replace the text duplicated from clip.m.maincategories with the appropriate text for this menu. Rather than remove the present Instances from the categories Layer, what I do is select each Instance individually and use the Instance Panel to swap or switch one Instance of a Symbol for another. For example, we have an Instance of static.text.preferences we wish to swap with static.text.animation. We select the Instance of static.text.preferences and {Click} the Swap Symbol Button in the Instance Panel. The Swap Symbol dialog-box appears which displays the Library. Rescale the Window appropriately and {Double-Click} on the Symbol you wish to swap with. The Instance of the Symbol is modified on the Stage.

  1. Do the same for the remaining Instances of text until you have the appropriate text Instances in place. Most likely, the Instances appear in the same place along the horizontal access, but are no longer aligned vertically.

  1. At this point, you can align them appropriately (flush left) and drag duplicates of clip.arrow down to the training and design sections (as they to have fly out submenus.) When complete, the Instance should appear as follows:

More Symbols have to be created. To do so, I follow the same procedure and name them appropriately. Fortunately, you won’t have to do them yourself as I’ve assembled them in the next file, m0007.fla. Load the file to continue with this tutorial.
